CFP: The New Cosmopolitanism: South Asians in a New World Order
(10/31/01; journal issue)
We invite papers for a special issue of Cultural Studies on "The New
Cosmopolitanism: South Asians in a New World Order." The issue deals with
the various ways in which South Asian life in the United States escapes
the commonplace assumptions of migration and assimilation, native and
other. We are looking for papers that address topics such as the practice
and influence of various South Asian religions in the US; positioning
identity through literature, art, and cinema; South Asian presence in
public culture; dominant and subaltern discourses; finance and economics;
race and invisibility; and, class and politics.
Papers (approximately 5-15 pages in length) will respond to and intersect
with an introductory essay that contextualizes and examines the status
and visibility of South Asians in US culture. They can be scholarly
works, reportages or samples of creative work.
Deadline for completed work is October 31, 2001. The Special Issue will
appear in the Spring of 2002. Interested authors should contact Gita
Rajan and Shailja Sharma for further details at
grajan@fair1.fairfield.edu and ssharma@wppost.depaul.edu.
