    CALL FOR ESSAYS

    theory@buffalo n7 -- 2002

    Topic: Nonsense

Possible questions include but are not limited to:

--- What is nonsense? What is sense? What is anti-sense? What place does nonsense occupy in philosophy and/or art? What is the relationship of nonsense to thinking? What rules (if any) operate in the realm of nonsense? What are the limits (if any) of nonsense? Can nonsense be subsumed under a concept or is it always a particularity?

--- How is nonsense related (or not) to reason, the ridiculous, the absurd, the preposterous?

--- How do we decide what is worth thinking about? Are there ideas or concepts that are somehow intrinsically worth thinking about or does the act of thinking itself retrospectively justify the worthiness of the object of thought?

--- How do we produce nonsense? Is nonsense the opposite of sense or is it just different from, without being opposed to, sense? Do sense and nonsense differ in degree or in kind? Can we avoid thinking of nonsense as the "more" or "less" of sense?

--- To what extent are we in control in the production of nonsense? Is nonsense produced by a self?

--- How is thought changed by thinking nonsense? At what level of consciousness or of reflection does nonsense appear as such?

--- Are there different kinds of nonsense (e.g. is there a kind of nonsense that is not ridiculous or funny, or is all nonsense funny?)

Submissions should be 10, 000 words maximum. Please send two blind copies with a cover page, on paper or a disk. No email submissions. See our web site for detailed submission guidelines. Web site: http://wings.buffalo.edu/theory

theory@buffalo is also looking for book reviews. Book reviews do not have to be on the topic of nonsense and should be 1200 words maximum.

Deadline for submissions: July 1, 2001.
