    NEMLA 4/02

Session Title: "But I always got A's until now": Helping Students
Overcome the Effects of Grade Inflation

Description: This session invites papers discussing problems resulting
from grade inflation, particularly in high school English classes but also
on the college level; papers reflecting the impact of instructors
heightening students' "self-esteem" by awarding them grades higher than
they have earned; and papers which highlight strategies used in the
college classroom to help students understand the requirements for
    acceptable college-level work.

I am particularly interested in learning if anyone has done any research
on the impact of whole language on students' spelling and grammar
skills. I also wonder if writing across the curriculum is being
discussed but not embraced or implemented, and if this, too, is making an
    impact.

There are many, many issues that relate to grade inflation and its impact
on students' writing skills and performance in college, and I hope to have
    3-4 presenters in our session.

Please send a 1-2 page abstract or a completed paper by 15 September 2001
