Fassbinder Revisited: Twenty Years After
CALL FOR PAPERS
for an approved Film and Cinema Studies session at the Northeast Modern Language Association Annual Convention
Toronto, Canada: April 12-13, 2002
In year 2002 we will mark the twenty years since the premature death of
Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982), a German film director, playwright
and actor. The panel on Fassbinder is an opportunity to reevaluate the
Fassbinder legacy: Which of his films survive a test of time? Which
actually gain by the passing of time? Who are the Fassbinder disciples?
Who is a Fassbinder's audience today? etc.
Very much the product of the 1960s counter cultural spirit, in his film
and theater work Fassbinder reflected on the crucial issues of the late
sixties, the 1970s and early 1980s (anti-establishment, sexual liberation,
identity politics, gay/queer aesthetics, the position of the [German]
subject in history, etc.) The recent New York production of Fassbinder's
play The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (the Henry Miller Theater,
December 2000), the appearance of Fassbinder as a character in Jessica
Hagedorn's play Dogeaters (NY Public Theater, March 2001), and the
retrospectives of his film work are some of the indicators of the undying
interest in Fassbinder himself as well as his work.
The proposals (1-2 pages) or papers on the relation between Brecht and
Fassbinder, anti-semitism and Fassbinder, the relation between
Fassbinder's "cinematic plays" and his "theatrical films," or any other
questions provoked by Fassbinder/his work are welcome and must be received
by September 15, 2001. Please send proposals or papers by regular mail or
via E-mail to:
