The Erotics of Teaching
The purpose of this panel is to explore the (inherent?) eroticism of the
teaching/learning relationship--to determine what constitutes such a tension
and to discuss the potential benefits and liabilities of it. Papers should
address the erotic nature of teaching and learning in the context of either
real or literary relationships.
Panelists may explore how writers have depicted pedagogical eroticism in a
variety of texts (e.g., fiction, film, biography) from a variety of periods
(e.g., Plato's classical Greece, Heloise and Abelard's medieval France, Tom
Schulman's contemporary American prep school in *Dead Poets Society*,
William Russell's contemporary Trinity College, Dublin in *Educating Rita*).
Panelists may also explore the pedagogical implications of how erotic energy
has factored into their own educational experience, either as students or as
teachers.
