Call for Papers: "Alice Dunbar-Nelson: New Approaches and Classroom
Strategies"
Deadline: Sept. 10, 2001
Session Proposed for:
MELUS
Society for the Study of Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States
16th Annual Conference, April 11-14, 2002
University of Washington, Seattle
Papers are solicited for a proposed session on turn-of-the-century writer
Alice Dunbar-Nelson. Previously acknowledged primarily for her local-color
writings and position as wife of poet Paul Dunbar, Dunbar-Nelson is
increasingly recognized for her own prodigious literary and political
contributions. Defying geographical boundaries (a Southern childhood and
Northern adulthood) genre classification (poetry, short stories, essays,
journalism, diaries and dramatic works) and racial categorization
(African-American, white, and Creole ancestry) Dunbar-Nelson's work engages
the multiplicity and complexity of turn-of-the-century race, gender,
rhetorical and regional situations. Papers are invited that address any
aspect of Dunbar-Nelson's life and work. As the conference theme is
"Multi-Ethnic Literature in U.S. Education," papers that examine approaches
to Dunbar-Nelson in the classroom are particularly encouraged.
