    Call For Papers
    Writing By Degrees 2001
    The Fifth Annual National Graduate Creative Writing Conference
    Binghamton, New York
    Conference Date: November 2-4, 2001
    Submission Deadline: September 14, 2001

    Writing By Degrees is seeking creative and academic submissions
    demonstrating or contemplating the praxis of creative writing. There will
    be a $25.00 conference participation fee. Submissions may fall into one of
    the below categories.

    Creative Submissions
    --*creative prose*--fiction or creative non-fiction should be of a length to
    be read within a 20 minutes period (roughly 10-12 pages); please submit the
    entire piece to be read
    --*poetry*--please submit 10 pages
    (Note: Authors of creative submissions accepted by Writing By Degrees will
    be invited to submit the works to the Fall edition of the journal *Harpur
    Palate* although acceptance for publication is not guaranteed.)

    Academic Submissions
    --please submit a 1-2pp abstract

    Possible Academic Submission Topics
    --the praxis of creative writing with an eye towards the space(s) or
    practices of current academia
    --creative writing and pedagogy
    --creative writing "versus" composition (?)
    --the impact of critical theory on the praxis of creative writing
    --creative writing, the voice(s) of students, and "authority"

    Hardcopy submissions may be sent to: Writing By Degrees; Department of
    English; Binghamton University; PO Box 6000; Binghamton, NY 13902-6000.
    Hardcopy submissions will be returned upon request and only if accompanied
    by a self-addressed stamped envelope.

    Submissions may be sent electronically to mgrubb@stny.rr.com . Please
    include "WBD Submission" in the subject line; attachments should be in MS
    Word or Rich Text Format.
