Session Title: AIDS LITERATURE - COMMON METAPHORS

Certain images and metaphors have left their
distinctive mark on fictional AIDS literature. From
"The Valley of the Shadow" to ticking time bombs and
dead flowers, some metaphors re-occur over and over
again. This panel seeks to analyze the usage of
metaphors and images in AIDS context: by exploring
fiction, poetry, jokes and song we will establish
which metaphors are used when, where and how, and what
makes them so uniquely AIDS-related. In how far has
"AIDS language" been shaped by metaphors? Is the use
of metaphors in AIDS context a positive or a negative
phenomenon - i.e. are metaphors a necessary poetic
tool or are they just used to mask the realities of
    life with HIV and AIDS?
