Seeking potential contributors to a collection of essays on the Showtime
series, STARGATE SG-1
Working title: Opening The Iris: Exploring STARGATE SG-1
Now going into its fifth and possibly final season, STARGATE-SG-1
remains one of the most innovative and thought-provoking science
fiction series in television history. While SG-1 has a huge presence on
the World Wide Web, an avid fan base, and growing syndication
exposure, the series has received very little scholarly attention. This
book aims to fill that void.
This volume has already attracted some attention from a publisher for a
proposed series of critical studies of television to be edited by David
Lavery.
Proposals on all manner of subjects connected to the SG-1 enterprise
will be considered, but some possibilities include:
STARGATE the film as a stand-alone topic or connected to the series.
The pilot as film
Intertextuality: allusions/ancillary texts
Egyptology/archaeology/anthropology/ and STARGATE-SG-1
Character studies of major and minor characters
Individual episodes: plots, subplots, story arcs
Studies of individual seasons
Reader/viewer response/audience analysis
Study of internet presence, fan base/ cult status, conventions, etc.
The science (physics/astronomy) behind the series
Visual effects
STARGATE-SG-1 in the tradition of science fiction film/television
STARGATE-SG-1 from various critical perspectives (cultural studies,
narratology, feminist theory, postmodernism)
Books in this series will be aimed at an educated, but not highly
specialized audience. While scholarly, essays for this volume should
not be obscure.
Please send queries or correspondence to the email address below.
Proposals of 500-750 word are due by the end of October 2001. If your
proposal is chosen for final consideration, due date for completed
essays will be May 2002.
