(Affirmative) Action Hero
panel for
Northeast Modern Language Association
Annual Convention
Toronto, Canada
12- 13 April 2002
Though formerly relegated to buddies and love interests, female and
minority characters now frequently take a more "active" and central role
in popular culture. This panel will explore end-of-the-millennium narratives (films, novels,
comic books, etc.) in which the figure of the American Hero is not male
and/or not white, and question how race and gender alter the construction
of the American hero, and vice versa.
