CONFERENCE CALL FOR PAPERS

Anchorites, Wombs and Tombs: Intersections of Gender and Enclosure in
the Middle Ages

An international, interdisciplinary conference to be held at the
University of Wales' rural conference centre, Gregynog, Newtown, Powys

5th - 7th July, 2002

Plenary Speaker: Jocelyn Wogan-Browne (Fordham)

Keynote Speakers: Alexandra Barratt (Waikato)

(Second keynote to be announced shortly)

This conference aims to examine primarily the intersections of gender
and enclosure from late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages, and
welcomes abstracts for 20-minute papers which focus on any aspects of
this theme. In particular, abstracts will be welcome which concentrate
on the links between gender and the anchoritic life and how this is
reflected in art, literature, history, theology etc.

Possible papers might include, but need not be restricted to:

Gender politics of enclosure

Anchoritic poetics

Metaphoricity and /or symbolism of enclosure

Anchoritic literature: textual criticism; issues of translation; linguistics

Manuscript studies

Architectural studies

Hagiographic representations

Iconographic representations

Non-English anchorites and /or hermits: Wales, Scotland, Ireland;

Continental enclosure; demographic studies

Abstracts of 200-300 words to reach the organiser by December 31st,
2001.
