Roundtable participants sought for
The Riverside Chaucer at 15: A Roundtable Discussion
a special session at the 37 International Congress on Medieval Studies
(Kalamazoo), May 2-5, 2002.
Three open spots remain!
---After The Riverside Chaucer was published, in 1987, its Speculum reviewer, Leger Brosnahan, wrote that it "[gave] every sign of remaining the international standard scholarly edition for the indefinite future." Fifteen years later and almost seventy years after the publication of F.N. Robinson's first edition, it seems worthwhile to investigate the edition's pluses and minuses in light of recent developments in both editorial theory and Chaucer scholarship.
The purpose of this session will be neither to praise The Riverside Chaucer nor to bury it, but rather to address and assess, as objectively as possible and from multiple perspectives, its continuing place in Chaucer scholarship and pedagogy and to point toward new directions for future Chaucer editions.
This discussion, ideally drawing on the scholarly and pedagogical expertise of four to six Chaucerians of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences, will address questions such as "What impact has this edition had on scholarship?"; "What strengths and weaknesses in the edition have recent editorial theory and Chaucer scholarship uncovered?"; "To what extent is Robinson's editorial model still appropriate as the basis for Chaucer editions?"; and "In what ways does The Riverside Chaucer facilitate and hamper effective undergraduate and graduate teaching of Chaucer?"
Each participant will make a brief opening statement, followed by a general discussion. Please note that the discussion will be confined neither solely to pedagogy nor solely to research, though individual panelists may wish to focus on one or the other.

Note: Participating in this panel does not preclude your presenting a paper in another session at Kalamazoo.
