For the Second International Edgar Allan Poe Conference in Baltimore, a
call for papers for a panel on Poe's poetry.
In recent years, cultural and historical approaches to literary studies
have fueled a resurgence of interest in Poe. Recent works that explore
Poe's relation to his times, however, usually bypass his poetry. This panel
will address the question of why his poetry has been resistant to recent
trends in literary and cultural criticism and will seek to open up avenues
of exchange between lyric studies and cultural studies. Papers that explore
the cultural engagements--urban, national, and transnational--of Poe's
poetry are welcome; so are papers that explore the twentieth-century legacy
of Poe's poetry in American mass culture. Send one-page abstracts or longer
papers by email or document attachment to erichrds@bu.edu. Mail paper
copies to Eliza Richards, English Department, Boston University, 236 Bay
Rd., Boston, MA 02215. Deadline for submissions is October 5.
