CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Nature and Environmental Writers – College and University Educators
(NEW-CUE), a non-profit, environmental education organization based in
Washington, D.C., invites submissions for possible presentation at the
Second Annual Writers’ Conference and Workshop in honor of Rachel
Carson, June 11-14, 2002 in Boothbay, ME.
New and established writers, instructors, and practitioners are
encouraged to send examples of their work: essays, poems, children’s
literature and selections from fiction and journalism, illustrating
contemporary environmental issues as well as those raised by Rachel
Carson who blended science with a lyrical appreciation of nature. The
2002 Conference/Workshop will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the
publication of Silent Spring, and Bill McKibben is scheduled to deliver
the Keynote Address.
The event will be both a scholarly and a social occasion, and we welcome
submissions that represent a 15-minute reading by the author during one
of the daily concurrent sessions. In addition to presentations by Bill
McKibben and other featured speakers who will read from their work, the
schedule will include time to informally discuss the work that was
accepted for presentation and a chance to meet with publishers during a
round-table discussion. Further information about the event and photos
from the 2001 Conference Workshop can be found on the organization’s
website http://www.new-cue.org
Please submit if your work will add to the discussion of the following
topics:
- the timelessness and constancy of all things within the web of
creation
- conservation of the natural world
- the integration of natural science with creative writing
- green forbears: the history of environmental ideas
- the intersection of science with emotion; reason with compassion
- the demystification and illumination of science for the general reader
- description and understanding of the ordinary as well as the
spectacular in nature
- love of the sea and the creatures both large and small that live
within it
- advocacy for wilderness preservation
- reverence for life in all its forms
- weaving history, science and literature
- corporate conservation initiatives
- cultivating a sense of wonder among children and adults as an
emotional response to the living world
Submissions should include a cover page with the author’s full name,
institutional or organizational affiliation (if applicable), and contact
information including mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail address.
Writing samples should be typed and no longer than three pages, with the
author’s name included on each page. Presenters will need to register
for the Conference/Workshop, and the event is limited to 100
participants. Please send surface mail, fax or e-mail before January
15, 2002 to:
