Postcolonial theory, although arising in response to some specific modern
problems of identity in the wake of European imperialism, nonetheless has
implications for investigation of broader ideas like culture, history, and
nationalism. Also, the study of Anglo-Saxon literature and history have
intersected with the Orientalism of a rising British empire. These two
sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo 2002,
will examine the ways in which postcolonial theory contributes to our
understanding of both Anglo-Saxons and Anglo-Saxonism. Papers connecting any
aspect of Anglo-Saxon culture or Anglo-Saxonism with Postcolonial topics are
invited. Topics might include: Anglo-Saxonism and Orientalism in the Early
Modern period; Anglo-Saxonism and Orientalism in the Victorian period;
Anglo-Saxons and racial purity; The possibility of an Anglo-Saxon national
identity; Conversion and Colonialism in the Anglo-Saxon period; Marginal
subjectivities - Anglo-Saxons and the continent; Indigenous signs -
vernacular translations and Latin texts.

Please send abstracts ASAP to the email address below, the deadline is 15
