We are seeking proposals for panels and presentations to be sponsored by
the Women and Theatre Program at the 2002 Association of Theatre in
Higher Education annual conference, to be held in San Diego, July
25-28. ATHE members and non-members alike are invited to submit
proposals that address issues of “women and theatre,” broadly
defined. For example, Women and Theatre panels at the 2001
conference ranged from performance activism to feminist studies of
theatre history to intersections of “race” theory and sexualit
Women and Theatre also welcomes panels that challenge theory/practice and
scholarship/performance divides.
Proposals can feature papers, round-table discussions, or poster
sessions. Panels with papers are limited to three speakers and a
non-presenting chair. You are strongly encouraged to utilize
panel configurations that go beyond the traditional 3-speaker panel
presentation, namely poster sessions and round-table discussions.
Panels without papers are limited to five speakers and a chair; poster
sessions are not limited to a specific number of participants.
Submissions to Women and Theatre should be sent to Laura Edmondson,
conference planner for 2001-2001 (see contact information below).
ATHE will not accept proposals which indicate that the presenters are
still to be determined. All persons whose names appear on proposals
must have agreed to attend the ATHE conference. In addition,
priority will be given to panels that include representatives from
various institutions (rather than all from the same university, for
example). Potential presenters should not apply to be on more than one
Women and Theatre panel.
Individual paper proposals will be considered, but preference is given to
complete panels. In the past, individuals have successfully
assembled complete panels through networking on the ATHE listserv.
See “Resources” on the ATHE webpag(http://www.hawaii.edu/athe)
for information on subscribing and posting to the ATHE listserv.
Proposals must be submitted on the official ATHE 2001 “Conference
Session/Paper Proposal Form. The proposal is available on ATHE’s
website (see address above). You must submit the proposal form with
the following materials:
1. Four copies of your materials
2. Two SASEs with your proposal.
3. An optional one-page resume for each presenter.
You may submit the proposal form electronically to Laura; however,
supporting materials (additional copies, SASEs, etc.) must be sent
separately via snail mail.
These materials must be received by Thursday, November 1.
Absolutely no late proposals will be accepted; however, if your
materials are incomplete, you will have one week to resubmit. For
example, the electronic submission can help insure that your initial
proposal form is received on the deadline; you can then follow up with
your additional copies. If your proposal requires extra time to
process because of missing materials, you run the risk of not receiving
the full consideration the proposal deserves.
