Romance novels constitute 58.2% of popular paperback fiction purchased in
the United States, generating $1.35 billion in annual sales. More than 41
million people in the United States read them.

Panelists and individual papers are invited to examine the popular culture
of romance writers & romance writing for the association's annual regional

writers with other academics and interested individuals.

Once again, we are specifically looking for individual paper proposals
and/or submissions for entire panels about this unique genre of fiction.

gender, subversion, sex and sex roles, genre, myth, social expectations,
ideal female/male representations, virtues, values, culture, power,
archetypes, transcendence, conformity, the body, history, technology, love,
the hero and heroine, social aspects, ethnic roles, and conventions.

Those interested in presenting a paper at this conference should send a
100-word abstract (or 300 word paper proposal) to the area chair via mail
or e-mail no later than November 15, 2001. You should also include a brief
