A panel for NEMLA 2002 in Toronto
    April 12 - 13, 2002

Hybrid American/European Films: The Best of Both Worlds?
    Chair: Anthony D. Hughes

The purpose of this panel will be to locate, define, and discuss the
aesthetic and philosophical merits of this new film style, which combines
European philosophical sensibilities (of auteurs such as Bergman or
Fellini) with mainstream Hollywood production values (to create such films
as American Beauty and Million-Dollar Hotel), to dare a guess or two as to
why and how it has evolved at this particular juncture in American film,
and to ask ourselves if we have ever seen this breed of film before.
