Postmodern Directors: American/European Hybrids--the Best of Both Worlds?
One type of film that directors have always been tempted to produce might be
described as an "American/European hybrid." American Beauty, by Sam Mendes,
is one such hybrid from the modern period. Such films attempt to combine the
"deeper" European visions that one might associate with directors such as
Bergman with some of the mainstream sensibilities/entertainment values that
one might associate with traditional Hollywood cinema. One question is: Are
such hybrids successful and/or even desirable? Papers are invited to discuss
films that either successfully or unsuccessfully blend American and European
styles and sensibilities.
