The Beat Generation and Counterculture
SW-TX Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference
Albuquerque, New Mexico
February 13-17, 2002
Need I say anything but send 'em in? On the backs of flying monkeys, even
though legibility, probability, and academic rigor will all be highly valued.
And where better to present these germs and gems of beat retrospection and
introspection than the high plains of the West? The 2002 meeting of the SW-TX
PCA/ACA will be at the Albuquerque Hilton near the University of New Mexico
campus. In addition to scintillating, novel scholarship on the title subject,
we would encourage papers addressing (but not limited to):
--The shamanic/beatific vision's role in Beat literature
--The influence of classical, folk, and ethnic literature on the Beats
--Modernism and the Beats
--Blues, jazz, and/or folk music and the Beats
--Asian religion and literature as an influence on the Beats
--European literature of witness as an influence on the Beats
--Beat literature as a reaction to W.W. II and post-W.W. II U.S. values
--Gender and the Beats
--Ethnicity and the Beats
--The Oral Tradition and the Beats
--Specific movements, places, and/or personalities
--Beat travel literature
--Beat literature and the environment
--Post-Beat: the Beat movement's influence on contemporary and post-modern
expression
Any modern language is welcome for presentations.
