Poetry and Liberalism, a special session to be held at the "Literature and
Democracy" conference, February 22-24, on the campus of Emory University
(Atlanta, GA).
The focus of this session will be the relationship between the Western
poetic tradition and the development of liberal democracy. More
specifically, we seek papers that address the role poetry has played, and
continues to play, in what is now generally called "liberalism." Possible
areas of inquiry include:
-poetry and the roots of liberalism/poetry as the root of liberalism
-Romantic poetics and liberal politics
-poetry's place in the liberal vs. communitarian debate
-how the question of individual rights vs. community need is
addressed by poetry
-can poetry be anything except "liberal".
Please forward a cover letter and 300-500 word abstract to
