The Department of English at Howard University announces a one-day
conference in celebration of the works and achievement of Sonia Sanchez.
A major figure in both the American and African American literary
canons, Sonia Sanchez is best known as a poet, short story writer,
dramatist, author of children's books, and an essential member of the
Black Arts Movement.
Reassessing the achievement of Sonia Sanchez, the conference will focus
upon all facets of Sonia Sanchez's writings.
Proposals are invited on any aspects of the works, politics, and
achievements of this author, including (though not limited to) the
following topics:
-Sonia Sanchez: Black revolutionary poet
-Memory and community: African heritage and the American future
-The poet as a creator of social values
-Teaching: Black poetry. Black women's literature. Revolutionary Drama
-Urban Black English as a vehicle for poetic expression
-The future of Black Poetry
-Sonia Sanchez's critical reception
-Orality, intertextuality, and voice in the Black poem
-Experimental form and socio-political content=97blues haiku=20
-Female identity and the practice of writing
-Sonia Sanchez in translation
Presentations will be 15 minutes in length. Submit one page (250) word)
abstracts on or before November 30, 2000, including in the abstract a
detailed plan for the presentation and any audiovisual needs. Abstracts
may be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to the addresses indicated below. For
