I am seeking essays for a proposed volume on twentieth-century
African-American writers. Although much has been written about the "major
stars" of the Chicago scene (e. g., Wright, Brooks, Madhubuti, Forrest), a
great deal remains to be done in regards to setting the context for these
authors. The purpose of this collection is to fill in the
picture--preference, therefore, will be given to essays that treat authors
working the period 1935-1990 who have been instrumental in the development
of the city's literary community, regardless of whether or not they achieved
national prominence. Examples of such authors include Frank London Brown,
Ronald Fair, Cyrus Colter, and Angela Jackson. 2-3 page prospectus and
current c.v. requested by December 15, 2001; completed essays (25-30 pages,
standard MLA style) from contributors by 1 July, 2002. Please send all
