FOLK AND PROTEST MUSIC
23rd Southwest/Texas Popular Culture/American Culture Conference

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Send a 200 word abstract and brief biographical
information to the Area Chair by December 10, 2001. Panels typically
consist of 3-4 speakers. Roundtable discussions or other alternate
formats are encouraged. Please include audiovisual needs (VCR, monitor,
16mm slide projector, overhead projector, etc.) with your proposal.
TOPICS MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Virtually anything on Folk and/or Protest music including Hip Hop Culture
A close examination of a work (musical or literary);
Folk/Protest/Rap/Hip Hop
Folk/Protest/Rap/Hip Hop pedagogy
Presentation may include musical element including performance
Examination of individual artists from any era: Woody Guthrie,
Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, through Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Tom Paxton
(1950s folk revival).
Contemporary; (after initial Bob Dylan)
Union Protest
African Oral Tradition in Rap/Hip Hop
Origins of Hip Hop
Effects of political leaders/events on music and vice versa
Examination of political/cultural effects of Folk/Hip Hop from any era:
Robert Johnson to Queen Latifa, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, P-Diddy, Eminem
Weed Creed
Musical Discourse: Hip Hop interaction
Merle Haggard's answer to Viet Nam protests
