    With The Metaphysical Club Louis Menand has written a "mainstream" book on
    pragmatism and post-Civil War American intellectual life. This panel seeks
    to evaluate the ways he has presented these ideas to an audience outside of
    academia. Topics could include: perspectives on post-Civil War America;
    views on the socialist politics of the day; interpretations of the work of
    William James, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (and senior) and Dewey among
    others; analysis of the reform of higher education and related issues.

    1-2 page abstracts with a cover letter.
