"Beyond Politics and the Pulpit: Culture and the Civil Rights Movement"
Proposed Panel for the AHA Conference-January 2-5, 2003-Chicago, IL
This panel will seek to challenge the traditional definitions of race
leadership during the black freedom struggle of the 1960s known as the
civil rights movement. While many historical studies of the movement have
focused on the political and religious leadership of people like Martin
Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, John Lewis, Bob Moses, Fannie Lou Hamer, etc.,
few have considered civil rights leadership outside politics and religion.
This panel seeks papers that consider civil rights leadership beyond
politics and within popular culture. Possible topics could include:
the music and business of Motown Records, black-oriented magazines, the
draft resistance and boxing career of Muhammad Ali, the rise of black
studies as an academic discipline, civil rights in Northern cities, and
black-owned businesses during the 1960s.
Please send a one or two page abstract and a CV by January 10, 2002.
