* In addition, we have one panel already forming: "THE ART OF
DEPARTURE: Feminism, Poetry and Performance Art in California" Here is the
description for this panel: The diversity of culture in California and the
marginality of its fragmented communities has contributed to the apparent
postmodernity of the major urban areas of the West coast, especially in the
decades following the defeat of the United States in Viet Nam, a period
during which poetry and performance art were major forms of artistic
activity for those concerned with feminist issues of social power and
personal definition. While feminist theory has altered the way cinema is
addressed and categorized, very little work has been done in considering the
relationship between communities of poets and performance artists in
Southern California within the context of popular culture. The emergence of
spoken word poetry, in particular, during the past fifteen years has blurred
the boundaries between the aura of the product (cassette/compact disc) and
the art form. Given the complete neglect of the Women's Building in the
most recent significant books about Los Angeles, I am especially interested
in papers which examine this erasure, and contextualize it within the small
press movement of the past half-century.
For individual papers: Please send or email 500-word proposal, a brief
biographical note and a short bibliography for the paper to address below.
For panel proposals: In addition to above for each paper, please include
brief statement of panel focus and name of panel chair. Proposal deadline is
December 10, 2001.
