We are seeking one more panelist for a proposed session for the 2002
American Studies Association conference in Houston. The proposed panel
will examine the way episodes of social violence, or even the perceived
threat of social or political violence, have been understood in earlier
moments of American history. Presently, one paper addresses
mid-nineteenth century discourse concerning John Brown, while the other
paper examines the rhetoric of violence and non-violence generated to
explain the Industrial Workers of the World labor union's cultural
position in the years before World War I.

Please submit 1-2 page abstracts and a c.v. via email to Jeffory Clymer
    at clymerja@slu.edu.
