James Schuyler: A Celebration
The Centre for Modern Poetry will be hosting a symposium on the work of
James Schuyler on 1 June 2002 at the University of Kent at Canterbury,
England.
James Schuyler (1923 - 1991) is among the most outstanding of modern poets.
Once read predominantly in the context of the New York School (Frank O'Hara,
John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch), Schuyler is now emerging as a major figure in
his own right. This symposium is the first British conference on his work
and as such the first sustained attempt to gauge how Schuyler has been read
and received on this side of the Atlantic.
We are inviting the submission of papers concerning any aspect of the work
of James Schuyler. As well as papers which treat Schuyler in the context of
the New York School, we are also interested in work which situates his
writing in other contexts. Please send an abstract of 300 words to The
Centre for Modern Poetry, School of English, University of Kent at
Canterbury, Canterbury, Kent CT2 7SE, England. Abstracts should arrive by 28
February 2002.
If you wish to be included in future mailings, or have any other queries,
please write to the above address or e-mail: modernpoetry@ukc.ac.uk
