Despite his repudiation of her, writers and critics have often noted a
relationship between Henry James and Jane Austen, particularizing their
connection in a way that acknowledges in it an inherent estrangement. If
Jane Austen bore no corporal fruit, one of Kipling's "Janeites" argues,
"she *did* leave lawful issue in the shape o' one son; an' 'is name was
    'Enery James."

For a panel on Austen and James at the 2002 SCMLA in Austin, Texas, we
solicit papers that imagine and examine a literary relation between Jane
    Austen and Henry James.

Abstracts of 250-500 words by 1/25/02 to David McWhirter
    (d-mcwhirter@tamu.edu) and Mary Ann O'Farrell (maof@tamu.edu).
