Announcing a Special Session at Computers and
Advanced Technology in Education (CATE) '02 (Cancun, Mexico)
Title: Promises and Pitfalls: Interactive Learning in Online Environments

As the possibilities for web-enhanced learning expands and the technology
supporting it grows more sophisticated, we have moved beyond the simple
delivery of information to the passive student-user. Educators are
working to allow users to interact with online systems in order to
accommodate hands-on approaches to learning such as are needed for
laboratories, workshops, and other classes that move beyond merely
    imparting information.

In the last few years, a variety of systems have been tried, including the
use of interactive Flash animations, intelligent tutoring, MOOS, bulletin
boards, and other virtual real-time and asychronous environments. These
new approaches offer many possibilities while highlighting challenges we
still face in trying to capture the advantages of interactive hands-on
learning in web based systems. Addressing these challenges and assessing
these possibilities requires that we share our best practices and work
together to study the on-going difficulties of creating effective online
    learning systems.

This session willconsider the results of ongoing projects, new
possibilities, and emerging trends in the use of web-based systems that
support interactive learning. Theoretical, pedagogical, and practical
studies are welcome, along with experimental applications and pilot
    studies.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

    * Real-time and Asynchronous Virtual Classroom Spaces
    * Interactive Multimedia – Applications andEducational Theories
    * Distance Education – Lessons Learned
    * What are the Challenges of Curriculum Design for Web-Based Courses?
    * How do We and Our Students Assess these Systems?
    * Institutional Support – Expanding the Use of YourSystem
    * Faculty Acceptance and Participation

Complete papers are due 01/15/02 and should not exceed 6 pages. For more
