    CALL FOR PAPERS

Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Conference on Christianity and Literature
    April 11-13, 2002
    Bryan College; Dayton, TN

Papers suitable for a fifteen-minute presentation (around 2000 words) are
invited. High-quality papers on any aspect of the relation between
Christianity and literature are welcome. Particularly encouraged, however,
are papers that deal in some fashion with such questions as these: Is it
possible to delineate general principles that help define distinctly
Christian ways of reading, writing about, teaching, and creating literature?
How is our work as teachers, scholars, critics, and writers of literature
affected by our profession of faith in Christ and the worldview that flows
from that profession? How does a Christian approach to literature relate
to, contradict, or meld with such theoretical approaches as feminism,
cultural criticism, narrative theory, new historicism, psychological
criticism, Marxism, or post-structuralism? Can whatever is distinctive in a
Christian approach be applied with equal effectiveness both to works that
seem clearly Christian or religious in content and form and to those that do
not? Further, are there any characteristics that can be said to distinguish
the approach of fiction writers, poets, dramatists, essayists, and
journalists, contemporary or historical, who have professed faith in Christ
or whose work demonstrates concern with faith-related issues?

In particular, we'd like to have one session, moderated by Dr. Beth Impson,
devoted to women's issues in literature. We also encourage papers by
students who have not yet earned a Master's degree, submitted with a letter
of recommendation from a college or university faculty member. A monetary
award is provided for the best paper in this category. Conference attendees
may also bring original poetry for a planned poetry-reading session.

Keynote Speaker: Professor Patricia Ward, Vanderbilt University

Deadline: Submissions must be received by January 31, 2002. Full-length
manuscripts will have the best chance of acceptance, but we will consider
abstracts and proposals. Send them to
