We invite proposals for a panel, Twentieth Century Heroines: Issues of
Displacement. Papers may address any concerns dealing with women's
displacement in modern or post-modern literary texts. These concerns may
encompass the physical, emotional, political, self-imposed or inflicted
aspects of hybrid identities, which often emerge when a character must
negotiate between her native culture and one that she is forced by
circumstances to accommodate. The inner conflicts which then develop are
frequently the result of the displacements caused, for example, by
globalization, immigration, or deportation. Topics might range from
explorations of the female characters in modernist fiction to analyses of
post-modern heroines in stories of immigration and alienation.
