    CFP: Revisiting James Weldon Johnson's "Black Manhattan" (3/01/02; MLA '02)

    Papers are invited for a special sessions proposal on Johnson's chronicle of
    African-American cultural achievements in New York. Specific issues might
    include the book's publication and reception history; Johnson's
    historiography and the book's value for future cultural historians;
    Johnson's tribute to specific African-American heroes/heroines; race and the
    vicissitudes of America's new popular entertainment industry; Harlem as a
    cosmopolitan province; black cultural achievement, black political
    aspirations, and American nationalism. Panel participants must be MLA
    members by April 1st. Send 2-page abstracts or drafted papers by March 1st
    to mnowlin@uvic.ca.
