I am seeking submissions for a proposed 3-4 person panel to present
at the 2002 meeting of the Modernist Studies Association (Oct. 31- Nov. 3).
Ireland's Abbey Theatre, also known as the Irish National Theatre
and the Irish Literary Theatre, emerged at a time where the notions of
nationality, literature, and Irishness were themselves highly contested in
Ireland and Europe. This panel will explore ways in which the authors,
directors, and actors of the Abbey adopted "modernist" strategies to
negotiate these conflicts. Papers may examine the work of individual
authors or the theatre as an entity, but should confine their analysis to
the years prior to WWII. Papers which examine the impact of direction, set
limitations, or management on the writing of plays are particularly
encouraged.
150-200 word abstracts should be received by April 1st, 2002.
E-mail submissions are preferred. Please include a brief (50 words or
less) introduction to yourself and your work, which I will send to the MSA
along with the panel proposal.
Send abstracts or inquiries to:
