    CALL FOR PAPERS

    POETICS OF THE TEXT

    7 - 8 June, 2002

In the light of a gradual shifting of emphasis from the radically free =
(postmodern?) textuality to a more traditional view of the artistic =
form, the conference aims to investigate the relationship between the =
two crucial terms "poetics" and "text". While the term "poetics" has =
traditionally been associated with the system, organisation, structure, =
the term "text" has come to express extreme citationality which was to =
subvert any rational organisation of the world, seeing it as a result of =
free play of signifiers. The following are the relevant questions that =
emerge from this shift: Is the view of the artistic text as a playful =
semiotic artifact tenable in the after-postmodern period? Is it not time =
for the aesthetics to look back and attempt to come to terms with the =
concept of the form or structure again, to re-value the term "the work =
of art" as a connector between the semiotic and the ontological =
dimensions of artistic texts? If yes, what particular lessons have been =
learned from the "rule of textuality"?

In addition to the primary focus of the conference, the contact between =
the poetic and the textual, the papers may also address the overlap of =
the poetic/textual to other fields, e.g.:

      linguistics,

      general semiotics,

      translation studies,

      philosophy,

      gender and cultural studies

      education, etc.

Deadline for registration and submission of abstracts (15-20 lines):
    March 31, 2002.
