    Call for Papers for a proposed MLA Special Session

    Panel Topic: The Urban Environment of British Modernism
    Modern Language Association, New York
    December 27-30, 2002

    This panel will feature analyses of urban nature or the urban appreciation
    of rural nature in texts of British modernism. Papers focusing on
    canonical and non-canonical modernist writers not previously considered by
    ecocritical approaches are especially welcome, as are readings of "natural"
    figurations within modernist formal experimentation. Possible topics
    include representations of institutionalized nature (museums, dioramas,
    teaching models); constructed nature (gardens, parks, zoos); natural/urban
    hybrids (smogs, canals, cityscapes); ephemeral experiences of nature;
    nature recollected in the city.

    Send 1-2 page abstracts and brief cv by March 15; email submissions
    preferred (no attachments, please).

    All participants in MLA programs must be members of the MLA by April 1,
    2002. Please note your membership status in your cover letter.
