Ireland and the Nobel Prize for Literature
This panel will explore the works of the four Irish-born writers awarded the
Nobel Prize for Literature: William Butler Yeats (1923), George Bernard
Shaw (1925), Samuel Beckett (1969), and Seamus Heaney (1995).
Papers may address the unique genius of a single author or the
connections--literary, political, theoretical, etc.--among any number of them.
Some ideas to consider:
* How did receiving the Nobel Prize affect the work of each writer? Did
receiving the Prize politicize their creativity in significantly positive or
negative ways?
* To what extent are the acceptance speeches literary? political? How do
these Irish writers position themselves and their country in this public medium?
* In what ways does such a global prize further the acceptance and
validation of Ireland as an independent nation?
* How do contemporary Irish writers appropriate this rich legacy for/in
their own work?
