CALL FOR PANELS/PAPERS
"Durrell & Co: A Multicultural Circle"
On Miracle Ground XII: The International Lawrence Durrell Conference
Ottawa, Canada, 20-24 June 2002
http://www.cas.ucf.edu/durrell/omg12.htm
>From his childhood in India to his years on the Mediterranean, Lawrence
Durrell (1912-1990) was awake to the idea of a great synthesis of East and
West, and his work daringly blends the traditions and idioms of Asia, the
Middle East, and Europe.
The first Canadian conference on Lawrence Durrell will emphasize the
multicultural sources of The Alexandria Quartet, The Avignon Quintet, and
all the poetry and travel writing in between.
Particularly welcome are papers and panels dealing with aspects of Durrell's
work that coincide with those of Canadian writers and how, like Durrell's,
Canada's literary heritage springs from many sources and merges many idioms.
Topics might include (but are by no means limited to):
Exile vs. expatriation
The exotic vs. the intrinsic in creating a sense of place
Multilingualism and transnational experiences
Cultural conflicts and harmonies
Proposals for (and presentations of) papers and panels may be in French or
English, the two official Canadian languages. Those proposing panels should
include a brief CV.
