The Discussion Group on Science Fiction and Utopian and Fantastic Literature
of the Modern Language Association is presenting a panel of three 20-minute
papers on "The Imagination of Disaster" at the 2002 MLA Convention in New
York. Though the topic was partly inspired by the special current interest
in war and terrorism, proposals are free to interpret "disaster" quite
broadly: the term can cover everything from terrorist attacks to
earthquakes, from economic catastrophes to planetary collisions--not to
mention the "normal" workings of disastrous social orders. Abstracts of
about 150 words should be received no later than March 15th, 2002. If you
can, send them by e-mail (but no attachments, please) to CFREED2780@AOL.COM;
they may also be sent by snail-mail to Carl Freedman, Department of English,
Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803.
