Call for Papers:
"Heroic Deviance: Literary Receptions of Non-Conformity"
The UCLA Department of English invites proposals for its 13th Annual
Southland Conference, a conference for graduate students to be held
May 10th, 2002, at the University of California, Los Angeles. This
year's conference will address issues of heroism and deviance,
exploring how and why certain structures and individuals are
valorized. We encourage papers on various topics, including, but not
limited to:
Transgressive behavior
Disability and illness
Monstrosity
Deformity
Mythic, folkloric or legendary depictions of heroes
Violence and violation
Experiments in narrative or poetic structure
Cultural conformity and non-conformity
Narcissism
Reader response theory
Hero-worship and idolatry
Literary and cultural taboos
We welcome papers on a variety of media, including novels, poetry,
drama, film, visual or performing arts.
Please send (via e-mail or regular mail) a one-page proposal, for a
20 minute paper, by March 16th to:
