Interdisciplinary Conference on Writing in the Academy, April 12-14, 2002
Oscar Wilde said, "A map of the world without utopia on it is not worth
looking at." However, many attempts to map utopia in the Western world have
achieved a less than ideal result. In fact, these failures have had such
deleterious effects that the term utopia has inherited a pejorative
connotation. Never before has the idea of utopia elicited as much fear,
apprehension, and skepticism as now, and, given recent world events, perhaps
now is the time when the promises of utopia are desired most. Given the
fears of totalitarianism, persecution, and other "utopian" mishaps, is there
a future for utopia in the twenty-first century? Is there a principle of
hope alive and well today or are dystopias inevitable?
