How are the categories of "masculine" and "feminine" being constructed
in Young Adult fiction in Canada today?
Do we still adhere to conventional representations of the sexes, or do
some of our writers dare to interrogate the traditional binary opposites of
male and female?
Do young people, both gay and straight, see options or imaginative space
for themselves in this literature? In particular, are gay and lesbian
characters at all present in our literature for young people -- and if they
are, are they still represented as marginalized, as "Other"?
Are female characters more likely to cross gender boundaries than male
characters?
Proposals for papers that seek to explore these questions are invited for a
special issue of _Canadian Children's Literature_. Of particular interest
are studies informed by current theoretical discussions of gender,
including (but certainly not limited to) Sedgwick's discussions of male
homosocial desire, Butler's theories of gender, and queer theory in
general. Submissions may examine the literatures of other nations, but
must discuss at least ONE Canadian work of YA fiction. Analyses which
compare constructions of gender identity in Canadian works with those in
American, British or other Commonwealth literatures would also be
welcome.
