    CENTER FOR COMPARATIVE IMMIGRATION STUDIES
    University of California, San Diego

    Second Annual Undergraduate Research Conference
    May 25, 2002

    CALL FOR NOMINATIONS PLEASE DISTRIBUTE

The Center for Comparative Immigration Studies (at UCSD), an
interdisciplinary research unit focusing on the study of international
migration, is seeking participants for its Second Annual Undergraduate
Research Conference, to take place on Saturday, May 25, 2002 at UC San
Diego. We are asking faculty and staff at all UC campuses, in all
departments to nominate exemplary undergraduate students who have
conducted independent research (i.e. independent study, honors theses,
etc) on international migration or refugee movements. Students may
present research on any aspect of migration and its consequences for
sending and receiving countries (e.g. immigration and refugee policy in
any country, immigrant integration, immigration and race/ethnic relations,
immigration and health care, bilingual education and communication,
economic impacts of immigration and emigration, the impact of
international migration on the politics of sending and receiving
    countries, the history of immigration).

Students must be prepared to submit a research paper (30 pages maximum)
and give a short (20-30 minute) presentation to a group of their peers.
Students who have completed longer projects may condense their papers to
meet the page requirement. Equipment for Power Point, slides, overheads,
or video presentation will be available.

This conference will be an ideal occasion for students to share their
research with others, learn more about international migration and
immigration studies, and become better prepared for graduate school.
Last year's participants unanimously found the event to be a highly
rewarding experience. We hope you will use this opportunity to enhance
the learning experience of undergraduates in your department.

No nomination forms are required. Please send a letter to the address
below, including the following: 1) student's name and department, 2) a
brief description of the student's work, 3) an assessment of its quality
and significance, 4) contact information for both the student and the
student's faculty advisor. Send this information to:
