We invite proposals for papers for a special issue of _Canadian
Children's Literature / Littérature canadienne pour la jeunesse_
continuing the discussion of the issues raised by a list of Shared
Characteristics of "Mainstream" Canadian Children's Novels, printed as
an appendix to "Teaching Canadian Children's Literature: Learning to
Know More" in issue 98 (2000) of CCL. Papers might deal with questions
    such as these:

    - What are the pedagogical possibilities of this list or such lists in
    general?

    - What are the possibilities and the limitations of this list or such
lists for the development of further useful knowledge about literature?

    - Do any of the characteristics listed suggest values that distinguish
Canadian children's literature as a particular collection of texts from
    other children's literature?

    - Might the shared characteristics be explained in part or as a whole in
terms of Canadian history, geography, government policy, or the material
    facts of publication in Canada?

    - Are the needs and responsibilities of a teacher of Canadian children's
literature different from, or even antithetical to, the needs and
responsibilities of a scholar of Canadian children's literature?

    - How important is it to consider the full range of typical Canadian
children's reading in developing a description of Canadian children's
    literature?

    - Do specific texts or groups of texts of Canadian children's literature
represent or diverge from the characteristics listed in revealing ways?

Send final papers no later than 1 Sept. 2002 to the guest editors of this
    issue:
