PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DATES - 2 AND 3 MAY, 2002.

The Fifth English Literature Conference At Eastern Mediterranean =
    University

Words, Wars, Worlds: Confronting the Polemics of Narration

The Department of English Literature and Humanities at Eastern =
Mediterranean University in North Cyprus announces its Fifth Annual =
Literature & Cultural Studies Conference to be held on 2 & 3 May 2002.

As the title of the conference suggests, war is a world-wide or =
planetary phenomenon which involves, willingly or unwillingly, all of =
humanity. Moreover, as the word "polemics" derives from the ancient =
Greek word for war - polemikos - serious questions surrounding the =
interface between language, violence, and human experience can be =
raised. For example, is the reality of armed conflict (especially in its =
current forms) at odds with an existing intellectual injunction which =
compels the critic to take an oppositional stance, or has the critic =
been co-opted into the dominant rhetorical structure? Are these crude =
oversimplifications, or has the Socratic dialectical search for truth =
been hijacked by the belief that good writing must position itself in a =
confrontational context, if indeed it does? By extension, does good =
writing equate to ethical writing? As information technology is now a =
pivotal communications medium, how does it affect the polemical style of =
criticism? War can be conducted on many fronts from the rhetorical, =
literary, fictional, historical, military-scientific, abstract, =
psychological, religious, cultural, as well as the physical and =
environmental dimensions. In what ways and on what grounds are these =
dimensions narrated, reinforced or confronted, and by whom?=20

With this in mind, we invite participants from as many disciplines and =
countries as possible to address approaches to perceiving, experiencing, =
writing, or articulating the manifold significance of past, present, and =
    future wars. =20

While we have provided a list of possible topic areas below, we warmly =
welcome further suggestions. As the conference aims to be as =
interdisciplinary and international as possible, we invite submissions - =
either individual or as panels - not only from Literature, Humanities & =
Cultural Studies, but from International Relations, Communications, =
Media and Journalism, Political Science, Government and non-government =
organizations and any other group or individual with an interest in the =
    subject. =20
