    Panel Title: Women Producing Modernism

Modernism is an especially intense period of collaboration between
writers and book producers (editors, publishers, patrons, anthologists,
and bookstore owners) because of the alternatives to commercial
publication offered by small presses and little magazines. The extent to
which women were active in modernism as literary producers is
unprecedented and under-theorized. As Robert McAlmon noted of James
Joyce’s female collaborators: “It is some kind of commentary on the
period that Joyce’s work and acclaim should be fostered by high-minded
ladies, rather than by men” (Being Geniuses Together [1938]). But what
kind of commentary on modernism is this? How did modernist women
conceive of their work as editors and publishers? What did men and women
writers make of their female collaborators? How do the discourses of
amateurism and professionalism inflect this gendered field of
    production?

All approaches and/or perspectives on this topic are welcome,
particularly abstracts focused on specific examples of women working as
editors, publishers, etc. 200 - 300 word abstracts should be received by
April 15, 2002. Please include a short version of your c.v. along with
    your paper proposal.

Send abstracts or inquiries, by e-mail or otherwise, to:
