MLA Convention 2002 Special Session Proposal: "The Myth of the Orient
in Representations of Vietnam"
This panel explores how Vietnam is represented in literary works and,
specifically, how these works imagine, validate, or critique notions of
Vietnam as an exotic landscape and/or the United States as an
imperial power.
Your paper may address any of these areas:
* the imperial gaze of the United States as represented in a literary
work by a U.S., Vietnamese, or Vietnamese-American writer
* the literary treatment of history (i.e. Cold War ideology,
political and economic foreign policy between Vietnam and America
etc.)
* the narrator/speaker/author as affirming and/or critiquing the United
States as empire
* the representation of the Vietnamese landscape or the Vietnamese
We welcome presentations that are interdisciplinary or theoretical.
Papers comparing the work of a U.S. writer with works by Vietnamese
or Vietnamese-American writers are particularly welcome.
