CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Association of Teachers of Technical Writing
(ATTW), 2002 MODERN
LANGUAGE ASSOC. CONVENTION, 27-30 Dec, New York City
[Please note: As an allied organization, ATTW is
guaranteed these two panels; they are not "special sessions."]
ATTW invites abstracts of papers for MLA panels on the following two topics:
1. Teaching Beyond the Page
Students and other stakeholders in technical communication often think of
this field as bound by the page, whether paper or digital. Thus, the work
of a technical communicator is understood as developing an accurate and
clear text. This view of the work of the field is limiting. We theorize
that the work of the field is productive and not merely representational,
but what teaching strategies can prepare students for complex
responsibilities? Proposals may consider such topics as knowledge
management and construction,
policy development and critique, and theories of language in thought and
action.
2. Domains of Technical Communication Research
Language touches all fields, and technical communication methods
potentially enable the analysis of any of these discourses. What are the
domains of research in technical communication? How narrowly or broadly
should the field's research interests be defined? How do we know when a
study is technical communication or something else?
Email submissions of abstracts (to rkdrury@nku.edu) are preferred.
Proposals are due no later than 1 Apr 2002 to:

Participation by graduate students engaged in new research in Technical
Communication is especially encouraged.
All participants at the MLA convention must be members of the Modern
Language Association by 1 April 2002. Papers are strictly limited to 15
minutes in reading length, as per MLA regulations; session chairs will stop
those who exceed this limit. Proposals should also state what kinds(s) of
audio-visual equipment, if any, will be needed, if the paper is accepted.
