The session "Telegraphy and Machine-Nostalgia: Dislocating the Possible"
will examine the technological, cultural, philosophical, economic, literary,
and/or political ramifications of the telegraphıs coming to Texas and/or
western and southern states or territories. You may develop the notion of
nostalgia any way you wish, including the depiction of telegraphy in radio,
television, or film; the dystopian machine; the reduction of the machine &
technology by language; the Internet, cyberspace and a longing for simpler
modes of communication (you may address actual hardware here); telegraph
workersı displacement; the semiotics of natural and artificial language; the
problematic of the sublime (or desire); and so on. American Studies
Association, Texas convention, October 31-Nov. 2, 2002, Schreiner
